Blood Orange Vodka Martini

Two glasses of blood orange vodka martini

Meet my new favorite martini! This Blood Orange Vodka Martini is a twist on one of my other favorites, a Lemon Drop. Blood orange juice, vodka and a little bit of grand marnier make this a delicious martini that is sure to become your favorite too!

This drink would be perfect for a date or girls night in! Serve this up after your valentine’s dinner for a special dessert drink. The beautiful red color just shouts “Valentine”!

What is a Blood Orange?

There are three main types of blood oranges, but what I have found in my area is the moro blood orange. They are the most common variety available in the US.

These beautiful citrus fruits are a deep crimson red on the inside and are a mix of sweet and tart. I have seen them labeled as blood oranges and as moro oranges while grocery shopping.

Did you know that winter is prime citrus season? They always seem like a summer fruit to me, but they are in abundance and at their best during the winter months.

Ingredients for Blood Orange Martini:

  • 3 Blood Oranges
  • 4 ounces Vodka – Use a good quality vodka such as my favorite: Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 2 ounces Grand Marnier (or other orange liquer such as triple sec)
  • 1 teaspoon Simple Syrup (or more to taste)
  • Sugar for the rim

Equipment Needed:

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Mesh Strainer

How to make a Blood Orange Martini:

One of the blood oranges is for garnish, so slice it up and reserve one for rimming the glass. Run the orange slice around the edge of each glass and then dip in sugar.

Set the glasses aside and then juice the remaining two oranges. Next, fill a shaker with ice and then pour the orange juice into into it. Use a small mesh strainer to strain out the pulp, if desired.

Add the vodka, grand marnier, simple syrup and shake well. Pour into martini glasses equally.

Float a slice of orange for granish and enjoy!
